P&Pers at the much famed Carnival of Climate Chaos at Shared Planet 06
Without urgent action, climate change will devastate life on earth. Hundreds of millions of people, particularly the world’s poorest and most vulnerable, are at severe risk of drought, floods, starvation, and disease. Up to one third of land-based species could face extinction by the middle of the century.
But it’s not all bad news. If we act now, it is possible to stop climate chaos. It’s up to us to choose to take action. By campaigning together, we can stop climate chaos.
Act Now
Below are the actions which you can take with People & Planet.
Strengthen the Climate Bill
Ed Miliband, Climate Change Minister

The Government have announced that they will increase the UK’s target for carbon reductions from 60% to 80%.
This is great news, but a loop-hole in the Climate Bill could mean none of the emissions cuts actually happen here in the UK. Instead the Government and corporations will be able to buy their way out of trouble.
- Take Action: Call on Ed Miliband, the new Climate Change Minister, to close the loop-hole and strengthen the Climate Bill.
Stop Kingsnorth - No new coal
As soon as Mid-April John Hutton MP the Minister for DBERR (Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform) may decide if Kingsnorth in Kent will see the first new coal-fired power station in the UK for decades.
This should be ringing alarm bells for anyone concerned about climate change because burning coal is the biggest threat to the climate and in the UK would wipe out any progress in cutting greenhouse gas emissions since 1998.
- Take urgent action to Stop Kingsnorth
Go Green
That’s why People & Planet groups at schools, colleges and universities around the country are part of the Go Green campaign to get their institutions to take climate change seriously and systematically improve their environmental performance.
- Join the campaign to get your school or university to Go Green.
Ditch Dirty Development
The UK Government is currently using taxpayers money to support oil and gas extraction projects around the world, mainly through the World Bank. And private banks like the Royal Bank of Scotland (which owns Natwest) use your money to invest in climate changing oil and gas. People & Planet is campaigning for an end to investment in dirty development and for a transition to a low carbon future.

Climate Change Bill
Action Expired - November 2007
In November 2006 the UK Government announced that they would pass a Climate Change Bill, creating a legal framework for long term cuts in carbon emissions. This is an amazing step forward, but we still need to make sure that the Bill is strong enough to make the cuts needed to ensure we avoid dangerous climate change.
